Bellingham Housing Authority provides housing assistance to more than 5000 people through seven programs. Please note that some programs may have long waiting lists. Also remember that eligible people may qualify for more than one program. Learn more about each program through the information below and links on the left.
Low Income Public Housing
Public housing units are managed by Bellingham Housing Authority. They come in a range of bedroom sizes. Most are located in apartment buildings, but some are located in smaller, multi-family buildings. People in this program:
- Earn 80 percent of area median income or less as a household to qualify
- Pay 30 percent of their household's monthly income for rent and utilities
- Live alone, with a partner, or with individuals who make up a larger household
- Meet screening criteria and have acceptable rental and criminal histories
- Are citizens or have eligible immigration status within one year of signing a lease
Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8)
Bellingham Housing Authority issues vouchers that cover part of monthly rent for privately-owned apartments or homes. (Please note, however, that the waiting list for vouchers is closed for the foreseeable future.)
Tenants pay the portion of rent not covered by the voucher and pay any utilities not included in the rent. People in this program:
- Earn 30 percent of area median income or less as a household to qualify
- Pay 30 to 40 percent of their household's monthly income for rent and utilities
- May rent from any private owner willing to be a part of the program
- Meet screening criteria and have acceptable rental and criminal histories
- Are citizens or have eligible immigration status within one year of signing a lease
People in this program are selected from a waiting list. This waiting list is closed.
